How To Decorate A Victorian Home
- The term Victorian architecture can refer to one of a number of architectural styles predominantly employed during the Victorian era. As with the latter, the period of building that it covers may slightly overlap the actual reign, 20 June 1837 – 22 January 1901, of Queen Victoria.

This was supposed to be my first cake free weekend.... I was sitting on Friday night contemplating my weekend of total relax.. when the phone rang! A hairdressing friend had a client sitting there who wanted a birthday cake for a friend for Sunday evening. The cake had to be large... and she had a picture of a cake I did a couple of years ago. This doesn't really resemble that cake... but all I knew was that she wanted a white cake.. with a hint of pink. I never spoke to her.. all conversation was done via the hairdresser... repeating everything the client wanted to me.. and vice versa my questions to her! Wasn't sure why she couldn't talk directly to me! LOL..... So... Saturday morning I was at the supermarket at 7:50am... 10 min before they opened.... baked all Saturday.. and had all cakes levelled, filled and ganached and waiting in the fridge before I went to bed. Woke up this morning at 7am. Covered all 4 tiers.. went and got a coffee & pastry... came home and finished the decorating.
The roses are real.. and I couldn't believe how lucky I was to find such gorgeous roses this morning! Usually I order them from the florist .... but having no time to do this... I just took my chances... They are actually more beautiful than any other roses that I have ordered!
This lovely old house is on the corner of MLK Ave. and Church St. in Elizabeth City. Originally, it was one of the most heavily decorated Eastlake homes in town. The original veranda was removed around 1920, and was replaced by these large, somewhat classical balconies (while not original, they seem quite attractive). Also in the 20's, the house was divided into apartments (in no way an attractive feature).
Today, the house is largely ignored (I often wonder why we even bother having a historical society- they don't seem to do much of anything). Thankfully, though, the house is still mainly intact. Most of the woodwork remains (though some bits were recently taken down),and it is kept freshly painted (plain old white, of course). It's currently for sale with Portfolio Reality- I don't know how much they want for it.
Oh, how I wish it were mine-
